I do art for my own pleasure. It beats sitting around, watching TV, waiting to die.
Ginger Sheridan
Biography:
Ms. Sheridan started photographing when she was eight years old, using her sister’s super hip Polaroid Swinger. When the images did not live up to her expectations, she began experimenting with petroleum jelly on the lens. Since that time, Ms. Sheridan has seen the camera as a starting point for self-expression, varying her media from large format palladium to pinhole snapshots, mixed media collage to digital color. Her work is exhibited locally, throughout the United States and also in western and central Europe. Exhibitions of her work in the last six months include Santa Trinita Gallery, in Florence, Italy and the Brest Gallery, Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, FL.
Ms. Sheridan is also an avid lecturer, both in the US and Europe. She speaks on her own work, the history of photography, best practices in art exhibitions and international education. She has spoken at the American Embassy, in Prague, Czech Republic, as well as her local branch of the public library. She has spoken at the Society of Photographic Educators, the Southeastern College Art Conference and numerous times at the College Art Association Annual Conference.
Ms. Sheridan is currently ranked as Associate Professor of Art in photography at Jacksonville University. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in photography from Ohio University as well as a Master of Arts degree with a concentration on the history and criticism of art from Florida State University. She teaches for Jacksonville University every summer in Florence, Italy, Paris, France and London, England.
Artist Statement: In December 2012, I participated in a group exhibition entitled The Essential is Invisible to the Eye (a quotefrom Le Petit Prince by Saint-Exupéry). The curator, an Italian literary figure, wrote that my work had Japanese sensibility in the handling of objects. He stated “if you touch a cup of tea for generations in the same family it brings you into contact with a corridor that leads right from the first to the last member who used the cup.” I realized that he had completely understood Look Away, my most recent body of work that deals with my own Southern Heritage.
To quote on of my great heroes, Mr. Rogers, my artwork is Emotional Archeology. I try to express the ultra-personal, unseen connection I have to my subject matter. Though I am not restricted by medium, since place and objects are paramount to my work, I primarily work in photography. I use whatever combination of image capture and printing can best evoke the emotion I am feeling. By presenting small size, intimate work of a quiet nature, my hope is that the pieces will communicate on a deeper level than document or fact.
