 History of the Florida Artists Group
Since 1949, the Florida Artists Group has held annual symposiums and exhibitions in a different Florida city each year. Education and other cultural aims are advocated at these meetings through lectures, panel discussions, curated exhibitions, demonstrations and other events, many of which are open to the public.
Annual Exhibit
All members are eligible to participate in the annual Florida Artists Group exhibition, which may be juried. In addition to the symposium, there are annual and regional exhibitions, events and opportunities sponsored throughout the year. The nature of these follow the character of the annual symposium, affording an opportunity to participate in different venues and bringing the membership together. Our goal is to contribute to the cultural atmosphere of our state. Each juror is an out-of-state artist, curator, educator and/or museum director.
Did you know?
Our first four presidents went on to achieve fame in the art world and their work is traded through auction houses. Our first President, E. Robert Hunter, served two terms as Director at the Norton Gallery in West Palm Beach, now the Norton Art Museum. Hollis Holbrook, FLAG's second president, has work in the Smithsonian as does our third, Willis F. Woods, whose Letters are in the Archives of American Art. Hilton Leech, our fourth and fifth president came to Sarasota in 1931 to help organize the
