Alice's Bio:
Initially trained as a linguist and educator, I gradually changed my career path and followed my passion for sculpture and stone carving. The process wasn’t very smooth or pre-planned, actually it was torpedoed by a tragedy that needed an output. What a better choice of medium than stone, with the help of a hammer and chisels!
In 2012 I had a successful exhibit “Made in Stone: Human Journey Through Time” at the Canton Art Museum in Canton, Ohio. As a result, I was featured in Akron Beacon Journal (“Canton Museum of Art Offering Exhibits That Push Boundaries”, Dorothy Shinn, art critic), Art Watch (“When Stone Speaks”, “Remembered in Stone”, Tom Wachunas).
Other publications included most recently “American Art Collector” (Feb.2017, through my affiliation with Reinert Fine Art, Charleston, SC), “Art in America” (through my affiliation with Aaron Gallery in Washington, D.C)., “Studio Visit” magazine (Cover, Volume 28), as well as “Sun Courier”, “Art of the Day”, “The Jewish News”, “ART” (Art Review Today).
“Stone Words” – Sculpture by Alice Kiderman, Poems by Shira Atik; Windjammer Adventure Publishing; 2018.
My sculptures have been acquired and/or commissioned by Akron Children’s Hospital, (Akron, Ohio), Stoneworks, (Cleveland, Ohio), OZ Art (Nashville, TN), Five Grapes, LLC. (Virginia), The Putnam Sculpture Collection, CWRU (Cleveland, Ohio), Vacuum Systems International, LLC (Cleveland, Ohio) and numerous private collections in the US and Europe. My sculptures have been exhibited in New York, Miami and London, UK, among others.
In April 2017 I received one month HOF Art Residency in Bangkok, Thailand, which culminated with a multimedia exhibit “Thailand Through My Lenses”. Also in 2016 I was invited to participate in the Mid-West Art and Culture Retreat in Kansas City, Missouri.
In summers of 2015, 2016 I conducted stone carving workshops for inner city teenagers (Cleveland, Ohio), which was most rewarding experience. In 2014-15 I was a Fellow of JACL (Jewish Arts and Culture Lab), Cleveland, Ohio and later in 2016 was invited to participate in JACL alumni shows “Slavery and Freedom”, “Crossing Threshold”.
I am an alumna of Vermont Sculpture Symposium (2009).
Artist Statement:
Mountains, rocks and stone have always fascinated me as a visible connection to the past, a remnant from the history of our planet. As a sculptor I take unyielding materials and work to release the universal stories of humanity contained – stories of tragedy, loss, triumph and gain –stories as old as time. Armed with my own life experiences, my own stories as guiding tools, I take hammer and chisel to stone to reveal three-dimensional visual expressions of human emotion. My figurative-abstract sculptures presented here for consideration explore all facets of life – relationships with each other, with earth, with universe; concepts of feminine and masculine, family and individual; experiences of joy, pain, conflict, peace, devastation, rebirth. Just as stone is ages old, these experiences are as well: the journey of the stone parallels the journey of humanity. Through my process, I uncover the timelessness of both material and what I see captured there.
