About the Artist:
Chee Bravo was born in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. The artist work ranges from two-dimensional works in Printmaking and Painting, to three-dimensional bricolage, to multimedia and interactive installations. Their cumulative approach to their work reflects their traditional beginnings as a printmaker, their long career in graphic design, and their childhood growing up in the culturally diverse Caribbean islands before emigrating to the U.S.
The artist uses digital platforms and photography to produce digital collages. These are then separated and prepared for silk-screening by hand. The artist’s performer series capture the moments of joie de vivre in carefully chosen subjects through color, form and movement. The artist’s journey began by creating silkscreens of the New York subway performers. The series has grown to include performers they find in subways from their travels, local performers in their hometown and the surrounding areas. Their artistic medium has also expanded to painting and mixed media.
The artist thought provoking, interactive, multimedia installations stem from their “Deity” bricolage work which is based on the worship of false gods in these times. This body of work is based on their interpretation of society’s preconceived notions. Their focus is to draw the audience into their world through multimedia, and in doing so question the viewer’s mindset.
The artist received a BFA in printmaking at the Florida International University in Miami. The artist was awarded a 2022 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. They exhibit nationally and internationally. Throughout their graphic design and fine art careers the artist has been recognized with several awards. Their most recent award is a distinguished 2022 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The artist had also received a Betty Laird award and National awards in the advertising sector including a prestigious Addy award. Their works can be found in the Trenton City Museum and Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission permanent collections, NJ, the Frost Museum permanent collection at Florida International University, FL, the Brooklyn Art Library, NY, Frontline Arts/PCNJ of NJ and private collections. The artist recently moved back from New Jersey to Florida and now lives and works in Miami.
