Jim’s Bio/Artist Statement:
Jim creates art that expresses his thoughts, emotions and dreams to evoke an emotional bond with the viewer.
He captures images of everyday life. He creates a visual comfort zone by using recognizable images, but then juxtapose them by adding and subtracting shapes and colour to stir the viewer’s visual and visceral responses. In portraiture Jim captures his emotional response to the sitter’s presence. The totality of the image seen from afar dissipates as you get closer to the painting. The view is obscured with accidental marks, unpainted areas and imperfections that represent a moment in the person’s life journey, their decay or re-generation |
For many of his figurative paintings Jim uses images found in newspapers, magazines and his personal collection of photographs. He explores the real life human story that these images depict once they are detached from the glamour and context of their original place. Working with the images instead of models Jim distance himself from the persons and use the emotions that are triggered by the images to inspire and compose the story.
Paintings of landscapes and waterscapes are driven by intuition, memories and feelings from Jim’s travels. Starting with a blank surface, the composition comes to life as he apply and remove paint. Forms appear and dissolve, dead ends are encountered and backtracked, and after all the chaos he arrive at a destination that is familiar and tranquil. Jim’s installation art is an attempt to break away from the constraints of the 2D space. Generally the idea for the installation comes to him at fleeting moments. He then execute the piece using found objects or by creating objects from scratch to depict the idea. Jim lives in Seminole, Florida, USA. He was born in Crete, Greece and grew up in London, England where he exhibited in various venues across London. Jim’s art can be found in private and public collections in England, Ireland, Norway, Greece, Canada and the USA. He does commissioned portraiture. |
