Artists Bio:

My primary medium is acrylic on canvas or wood panel.

I am from Virginia, living near Washington, D.C.  where I frequented the galleries and museums from an early age.

I attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. The Fine Arts department was a rich place to learn about the broad range of creative thinking and expression, from Installation, Performance, Film, and Conceptual art, but I was at heart a painter.

After graduation, I moved to San Francisco, where I worked as an archival picture framer. Soon I was working for Crown Point Press, a prestigious intaglio printing press and gallery, where I framed the artwork for Richard Diebenkorn, John Cage, Wayne Thiebaud, Francesco Clemente and many others.

After working for several years as curator for a nonprofit art gallery, I attended San Francisco State University, receiving my MFA in painting.  I moved to Florida soon after, and taught Art at Daytona State College, and high school and middle school for the Volusia County School District.

I feel that my art is as much a reflection of our times, and my experiences in life, as it is a love of color relationships, atmosphere, and striving for visual unity.

I am a member of Florida Artists’ Group, (FLAG), Beaux Arts of Central Florida, of which I am also the current President, and The Art League of Daytona Beach.

Artist Statement:

My purpose in making art is to use the medium of paint to capture significant moments in an environment that is changing more quickly than it appears to be, as it relates to human existence.

The reference to landscape appears frequently in my work, but not in the traditional, 19th century academic sense. There’s a lot of change in size relationships of objects and distance in space. My paintings are sometimes informed by photographs I take on my nature walks, when I use the technology of my cell phone to zoom in, searching for interesting plants or water reflections, so what the viewer sees is in a painting is an enlarged close-up of aspects of nature that they might not ordinarily notice, such as the pattern of vines clinging to a tree trunk. Then I draw out a composition, supplying images from my imagination. Atmospheric glazes give the paintings a dreamlike departure from reality. A painting is not finished until it possesses a powerful presence.
