Artist Statement:
For a short while on June 18, the Trump campaign published a Facebook ad calling for supporters to take a stand against “dangerous MOBS of far-left groups” and to sign a petition declaring Antifa a “terrorist organization.” Accompanying the call to action was a large, inverted red triangle. As those familiar with Nazi imagery and the history of World War II recognize, this same symbol denoted “political prisoners” within the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. While many may know about the use of the yellow Star of David, there were in fact many symbols use to mark various types of political prisoners: Jews, Gypsies, those imprisoned for sexual orientation, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and many more each had their own symbol assigned within the classification system for the camps.
The references that our current politicians are evoking from the ugly past of Nazism, are frightening. In large because we tend to forget, what it does to our souls and our future generations.
Nationalism is a way of life for a nation, that believes in separation, and in keeping out others. Those others first are described as others, as animals (in case of Jews during WW2 as mice) their only possible future faith is to be eliminated.
This way of thinking, entitles that society erecting walls at borders. Borders that might not be natural and as quite a modern concept. Borders that are separating, killing and alluding us.
Those borders are made of mortar and stone, of metal or water, but they could be made of words as well. They are often living in our imagination as fearful demonic.
As a second generation to a Holocaust survivors and as a war widow (Yom Kippur War in Israel), I am continuously, through my art, criticizing and reminding ourselves of our mutual modern human history and an urgent need for correction for the future.
