Gerald’s Bio:
Gerald Obregon has been an art teacher in the Miami-Dade County Public School system since 1998. He was part of the Magnet Art Program at Norland Middle School from 1999 – 2010 and the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Robert Morgan Educational Center from 2010 – 2012. At the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, he became a member of the faculty at Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts, a magnet
school focused on the different artistic disciplines for grades 6 – 12. In the Fall of 2017, he joined the faculty at Florida International University as an adjunct professor in their Art Education Department.
He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Illustration (1986) from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 1998 he received a Masters of Science in Art Education from Florida International University.
In 2007, he started exhibiting his own work in various Miami area shows. Since that time he has become an award winning artist, exhibiting in shows around Florida; Miami, St. Augustine, Sarasota, and Melbourne. His work has also been seen nationally in places like Colorado, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia..
Artist Statement:
I enjoy the process of painting. Each piece I paint is a visual problem to solve. Sometimes the problem is color. Sometimes the problem is value. Sometimes the problem is using just the right touch on the brush to apply the paint onto the canvas. With each piece I complete, I find the answer is a small piece of a large puzzle that will never be solved. I am fascinated by the work of the Impressionists and how they worked with colors applied in a fast and loose manner. The simplest stroke of a paintbrush on canvas can convey so much with so little; be it a landscape, still life, or portrait. For the last few years I have been producing more landscapes than portraits or still life paintings. At first I kept to traditional subjects with greenery and bodies of water, but I have since expanded my choices to include the glass, metal and concrete you would find in more urban settings. In each case, I try to capture the play of light and color on forms.
