Artist's Bio:
Elisabeth Phillipson is an award-winning artist who currently resides and works in Sarasota, Florida. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ms. Phillipson received a BFA from the University of Denver. After moving to Chicago, she established a graphic design studio, working for public relations firms and corporations such as Quaker Oats and United Airlines. An interest in Expressive Arts Therapy led Ms. Phillipson to work for her Master’s of Social Work degree, which resulted in her working as a psychotherapist for some years. Throughout her life, Ms. Phillipson has had a passion for observing and creating art. Previous study has focused on understanding the structure and light of landscape painting, which has morphed into the abstraction of landscapes and non-objective art.
Artist's Statement
Though my work is currently nonobjective, it has often been inspired by landscape and elements of landscape. Looking at expanses of nature and elements of nature, I see abstract compositions of light and dark, and arrangement of pattern and hue. Often, I imagine a landscape flattened, or visualize an aerial perspective. Using these mental images, space becomes ethereal, and perspective variable. The most current body of work emerges from a process that includes bursts of spontaneous mark making, which could be calligraphic line, dripping paint, or scumbled masses, which become partially or entirely buried or hidden and then rebuilt as the work takes on a life of its own and calls for what it needs. It ultimately becomes about shape, line, color, and pattern pushing toward harmony and balance within chaos, until the picture plane registers right. Ms. Phillipson has shown her work in galleries and juried shows and has won a number of awards.
