Artist's Bio:
Gretchen Ebersol received a BFA in painting from Memphis Academy of Art (Memphis College of Art) and
an MFA in painting from the University of Florida. She has been an adjunct professor of art at Jacksonville
University and FCCJ (FSCJ). She also was Artist-in-Education for the Duval County School System and is
retired as Chair of the Visual Arts Department at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, Duval County's
magnet arts high school. In addition to being a practicing artist, she lectures and conducts workshops on
mixed media and altered books. She also curates and adjudicates exhibitions, and does commission work.
Artist Statement:
My work has evolved from two primary influences. One is a life-long concern and reverence for the
natural world. Of special interest to me are life cycles and disappearing habitats, experienced through
the activities of gardening and traveling. These experiences become an amalgam of real, remembered
and imagined places. The second influence comes from encountering the unexpected relationships among
found objects, including text, which, when combined, form new meanings. In addition to these influences,
physical limitations are allowing a deeper exploration of materials and processes.
