Artists Bio:

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Janet Mishner received a B.A. in Art Education from University of Maryland, with post-graduate classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Towson University. She taught art in Baltimore City Public Schools and Towson University Community Art Center. She studied painting for many years with distinguished Maryland artist Gladys Goldstein.
Her expressionistic work was featured in numerous solo shows, galleries and private collections in Baltimore.

Since moving to Florida in 2002, she continues to participate in shows as a member of the Women Contemporary Artists, a regional organization of professional artists, The Dancing Crane Gallery of Fine Art, and numerous other venues in this area. Her work is in several public collections including Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Florida Cancer Specialists, and Kaizen Total Wellness Center. In addition to Florida Artists Group, Inc, she is a member of the Petticoat Painters (artists must be nominated and art work juried before being invited into the group.)

Artist Statement:

My present work articulates my experience of psychoanalytic ideas as they relate to the process of art. I approach my work with an impulsive choice of materials and mark making as an attempt to replicate thinking at a subconscious level, eliminating rationalization for artistic decisions. By choosing various art mediums, papers, stains, etc. without much thought I strive to activate the part of my mind outside the range of awareness.
I proceed to create layers, with each successive layer covering but yet exposing the layer beneath it.  Gradually, as my layers build, I become more aware of something on the canvas that resonates for me.  At this point, I start to build in a purposeful way.  At this stage in the process, the canvas begins to tell me what to do.
Equally important to me, in the process of creating the artwork is the viewer. I try to finish a piece before my conscious awareness of it becomes so defined as to eliminate the opportunity for other interpretations. If I am authentic to this purpose, then the work must leave space for the viewer to be an integral part of the process.
