Joan's Bio:
Born in Providence, RI, Joan moved to Florida by way of Maryland and Illinois. She loves making art and has been an artist ever since she can remember. Joan's subject matter is the human experience and the beautiful environment and wonderful wildlife that enrich our lives. She has worked in many media from large oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, to assemblage and sculpture in clay and marble, from watercolor, to pastel and prints and has always used collage.
Currently Joan is working in mixed media monotype. Her work has always been about ideas, and she considers her work to be social commentary.
Joan received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland and postgraduate study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and print workshops at the North Shore Art League.
Currently her work is exhibited at the Artists of the Court Gallery in Sarasota, FL and at Lydon Contemporary, Inc. in Chicago. A member of the Florida Artists Group and Women Contemporary Artists, she has exhibited in juried group and solo shows, won prizes and grants and is a lifetime member of the National Collage Society. Her work is included in many public and private collections.
Artist Statement:
My figures are symbolic images which originate from experience, imagination and dreams. The rough and imperfect surfaces of my mixed media monotypes metaphorically reveal the fragility of both the earth and every living thing on it. These works of art express my belief that only when we are able to live in a harmonious relationship with our world can we truly fulfill our potential as human beings.
