Susan's Bio:
Susan Turconi is a recipient of a M.F.A. from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and a B.A. from William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey. Prior to matriculation, she was awarded scholarships and studied at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in Brooklyn, New York and the National Academy of Design in New York City.
Turconi is a mixed media artist who has exhibited, taught and lectured extensively. Her works are included in private collections in America as well as Switzerland, Spain, Wales, Japan, and France. The artist is represented in the public collections of City Hall in Venice, Florida, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn New York, Rutger's University, New Jersey State Museum, Newark Museum and Bergen Museum of Art and Science, all in New Jersey. Her work was also included in the Merrill Lynch Corporate Collection at the World Trade Center (destroyed 9/11/01).
In 2005, Turconi was an invited featured speaker presenter at the World Forum Convention Center, the Hague, the Netherlands for the EUROPEAN COUNCIL OF EUROPEAN STUDIES (www.ecis.org) at their annual general meeting, conference and exhibition. Her topic: "Break Through Barriers, the Cultural Challenge of Creativity in the World of Art." She spoke on three occasions: as an artist, an educator and a survivor of the world of art and the ivory tower. In 2006, ECIS invited her again to speak at the Acropolis, Nice, France. "Visual Literacy in the 21st Century" was the topic and included: "Word as Art, Color as Art and Composition as Art". On each occasion, Turconi displayed her work relevant to the particular topic.
Turconi continues to lecture and give workshops, presentations and act as juror for various community groups. In 2010 she was the juror for the National League of American Pen Women National Exhibition. The artist is an adjunct professor at State College of Florida, Venice Campus and teaches Art History I and II. She has also taught an assortment of studio classes at the Venice Art Center and on the college level in the Northeast including Vermont Studio Workshop.
The artist has received many awards in her career including juried international competitions, specific invitations and juried grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Artist League of Central New Jersey, ART GOES PUBLIC artist in residence programs, Grumbacher Medal and others. Turconi has been included in Who's Who in American Art since 1985.
Artist Statement:
I am a true Pisces. My work is always going in more than one direction at the same time. Sometimes I will do a piece for the physical enjoyment of the working experience and other times, I will do a piece because I have something to say. Ultimately, the goal is communication.
