Rosa’s Bio:
My name is Rosa Valladares, I began my journey as an artist in my home town Lima, Peru. I was attracted to art since a very early age and found my passion for it when I started studying art at the National School of Art in Lima. There, I earned my BA in Printmaking and Drawing, also graduated with a Silver Medal award.
I have always been fascinated by drawing, some crafts, and I enjoyed fixing things. This interest drew me to printmaking and its hard contrast of black and white. Coming from a traditional school the depiction of social aspects of life was very common. Then, I started working with those subjects throughout my undergrad years and further develop an interest for the role of women in a society.
Later, I became a professor in the same school. I taught lithography for five years and spent one year teaching a collagraph workshop. My passion for art continued over the years, and the images/concepts of women psyche and their experiences in my work were stronger. I came to the United States pursuing a Master printer workshop program at Tamarind Institute in New Mexico. And later on, I earned a Master degree in Fine Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
After completing my degree, I delved even more into the study of the feminine body and its surroundings and my body became a source of different feelings. I continued studying the formal aspect of the feminine body and its configuration and dimensions in order to transform it in my work. I also use my own representation along with the transparent quality of the material as a pertaining quality to women. Furthermore, the physiology of the body is used as a way of representing the corporeal; its representation has the intention of presenting the subjective part of the work – an expression offering that engages the social, personal and scientific aspects of human nature.
When living in Maryland, I was also trained as a teacher. I taught 15-18 years old and College level, in order to cultivate the same enthusiasm to create and appreciate art. Soon Maryland, overwhelming me with nature, I promptly embraced it to explore. It became a parallel exploration within the feminine body. With nature, I am more aware of the different physical aspects of the seasons such as the change of colors, the signs and changes of plants before it rains or snows and when it is humid or foggy. It amazes me that these changes were always happening but now I really see them. There is also a paradoxical way of looking at these impressions; the way I look at these singularities in nature, which are my impressions and the actual impressions/imprints created on the different kinds of support I use for my new exploration.
I was granted with a full scholarship during my studies at University of Pennsylvania (2000-2002). And a Fellowship from Penland School of Arts and Crafts, NC in 2000. Also received a grant in 2009 from AAUW (American Association of University Women).
I have three solo exhibitions, at Northern Virginia Community College, VA and the Peruvian Embassy in Washington, DC and at Borkas Gallery in Lima, Peru.
