Judge’s Statement
Born in in in in in in in Peoria Illinois Julie Heffernan received her BFA in in in in in in in Painting and and Printmaking from from the the University of of of California Santa Cruz and and her her Masters of of of of Fine Art Art in in in in in in in in Painting from from the the Yale School of of of of Art Art Her lush paintings are manifestations of of of of of Heffernan’s Baroque sensibilities and rich knowledge of of of of art history—the interior spaces of of of of her compositions often refer to to grand ballrooms and and and ornate drawing rooms rooms while the the exteriors are are placed within abundant forests and and and imagined worlds Something of of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a contemporary surrealist her her compositions are are drawn from from the the peculiar nonsensical narratives of of of of her her her dreams As a a a a a a a a a a a a a a result of of of of drawing so directly from from the the the images of of of of of her her her subconscious Heffernan considers much of of of her her work as as a a a a a a a a kind of of of self-portrait and titles them
